Rebar Size Chart FAQ

How are rebar sizes numbered?

For #3 through #8, the bar number is the diameter in eighths of an inch: #4 is 4/8 = 1/2 in, #5 is 5/8 in. From #9 up, bars were made to match the area of the old square bars, so their diameters are not exact eighths (#9 has 1.00 in² of area and a 1.128 in diameter).

What does "#4 @ 12 OC" mean on a drawing?

Number 4 bars spaced 12 inches on center (center to center). Drawings often add T&B (top and bottom faces) and EW (each way, meaning both directions), e.g. "#4 @ 12 OC, T&B, EW".

How much does a 20 ft stick of #4 rebar weigh?

#4 rebar weighs 0.668 lb per foot, so a 20 ft bar is 13.36 lb. A bundle of ten 20 ft bars is about 134 lb.

What does the metric size on rebar mean?

When US bars are used on a metric project, they are called out by a soft-metric size: the nominal diameter rounded to the nearest millimeter. #4 becomes 13, #5 becomes 16, and #6 becomes 19. It is the same physical bar.
