How to measure your foot for ski boots
- Wear a thin sock and stand on a sheet of paper with your heel against a wall.
- Mark the tip of your longest toe (not always the big toe).
- Measure from the wall to the mark in centimeters. In inches? Multiply by 2.54.
- Round to the nearest half centimeter. That is your Mondopoint size, for example 26.5.
A measured foot length beats a shoe-size conversion. Street shoe sizes vary by brand, and many people wear shoes that are a bit roomy, which is fine for walking but too loose for skiing.
Ski boot flex and fit by ability
Flex is how hard it is to bend the boot forward, given as a number on the cuff. Softer boots are forgiving and comfortable; stiffer boots transfer more power at speed. There is no industry standard, so one brand's 100 can feel different from another's; compare models within a brand.
| Ability | Men's flex | Women's flex | Boot length |
|---|---|---|---|
| Beginner | 60–90 | 50–70 | Your measured Mondo size |
| Intermediate | 80–100 | 70–90 | Your measured Mondo size |
| Advanced | 100–120 | 85–115 | Measured size, or up to ½ size smaller |
| Expert | 120–130+ | 105–115 | ½ to 1 size smaller, with a bootfitter |
Adjust for your size: lighter or shorter skiers can't bend a stiff boot well and usually want the soft end of the range, while heavier or taller skiers often need the stiff end, even as beginners.
Ski boot width (last)
Besides length, boots come in different forefoot widths, called the last, measured in millimeters across the ball of the foot. Most brands make two or three widths. Your street shoe width is a good hint:
| Last | Forefoot width | Street shoe width |
|---|---|---|
| Narrow (low volume) | about 96–99 mm | A–B |
| Average (mid volume) | about 99–102 mm | C–D |
| Wide (high volume) | 102 mm or more | E and wider |
How ski boots should fit
- Snug all over, holding your foot still. A loose boot gives poor control and rubs.
- Toes touch the front when you first step in; flex forward and they should pull back slightly.
- No sharp pressure points. A bootfitter can stretch a shell or liner, but can't shrink a boot that's too big.
- Try boots on with a thin ski sock, the same kind you ski in.
- Shells usually come in whole sizes, so half sizes often share a shell; if a size feels big, try a full size down.

Ski Boot Size Chart FAQ
What is Mondopoint?
Mondopoint is the international shoe sizing system used for ski boots. The size is simply your foot length in centimeters: a 26.5 Mondo boot is meant for a foot about 26.5 cm long. It is defined by the ISO 9407 standard, which is why ski boots from every brand are labeled with it.
How do I measure my foot for ski boots?
Stand with your heel against a wall, then measure from the wall to the tip of your longest toe in centimeters. If your tape is in inches, multiply by 2.54. Round to the nearest half centimeter and that is your Mondopoint size.
What ski boot size is a men's 10?
A US men's 10 is Mondopoint 28, UK 9, and about EU 43. Shoe conversions are only a starting point, though; measuring your foot is more reliable, because many people wear street shoes a little big.
What ski boot size is a women's 10?
A US women's 10 is Mondopoint 27, the same as a men's 9. Women's US sizes run one size larger than men's for the same Mondopoint.
Should ski boots be tight?
Snug, yes; painful, no. When you first put them on, your toes should touch the front of the boot. Buckle up and flex forward into the shin, and your heel should slide back into the heel pocket so your toes have a little room. A boot that feels roomy in the shop will feel loose once the liner packs out.
Should I size down in ski boots?
Most skiers do best at their measured Mondo size. Advanced and expert skiers often choose a shell half to one full size smaller for a tighter, more responsive fit, usually with help from a bootfitter to make it comfortable.
Why do 26.0 and 26.5 ski boots feel the same?
Ski boot shells usually come in whole sizes, so two half sizes share one shell and differ only in the liner or footbed, or not at all. Brands split the pairs differently: some share 26.0 and 26.5, others 26.5 and 27.0. If a boot feels too big, the next shell down is a full size smaller.
